Your Instagram Ban Is Real. The Person Who Could Fix It Has No Reason To.
Scroll through X for an hour and you'll find them — dozens of people begging Instagram to look at their case. Most have been waiting weeks. Some are paying subscribers. None of them are getting answers. Here's what's actually going on.

On April 9th, a user named Zacharia posted this to X:
I followed @Snapchat official account on @Instagram and my 15-year-old account (from 2010) was instantly disabled for being 'fake'! How is a 15yo account fake?! Fix this nonsense. @Meta @InstagramComms @mosseri
82 impressions. No likes. No replies. This is what it looks like when someone's entire digital life gets switched off and nobody notices.
Following the official Snapchat account triggered a fake account classifier. A 15-year-old account, gone in seconds. The reason in the violation notice — “fake account” — has nothing to do with what actually happened. But that's what the notice says, so that's what gets appealed.
The Mass Disable Nobody Talks About
Here's one that should get more attention:
My Instagram account was suddenly disabled around 3:30am on 7th and not just mine. Every account logged into my device, including my friends' accounts, was also disabled. @InstagramComms @Meta @instagram @metaindia @GoI_MeitY @AshwiniVaishnaw
Every account. On every device that touched the same login. At 3:30am. This isn't enforcement — it's collateral damage from a risk model that treats shared devices as a single node. If someone's account on your phone gets flagged, your roommate's account goes down too.
And since the violation reason is almost always wrong, you're now trying to appeal something you didn't do, caused by something you didn't know was happening on your network.
Paying for Meta Verified Doesn't Change Anything
Three separate Meta Verified subscribers posted about their experiences in the last four days. None of them got help.
"Unbelievable! @Instagram support admits my account was disabled due to an 'automated error' but refuses to reactivate it. I am a paying Meta Verified creator! This is a complete scam. Need immediate help @mosseri @Meta @Instagram
Read that again. Instagram support admitted it was an automated error. And still refused to fix it.
Subject: Manual Review Request for Disabled Instagram Account — False Positive CSAM Flag. I am a Meta Verified subscriber and I am writing to report a serious error made by the automated system regarding my Instagram.
A false CSAM flag on a paying subscriber. Filed a formal manual review request. No response.
I pay for Meta Verified support & still have no real help. My hacked/disabled acct has 15+ yrs of irreplaceable family photos/videos & is set for deletion. NOT asking for reinstatement. Need access to my photos before deletion.
She's not even asking for her account back. Just access to her photos before they're deleted. And she can't get that.
The Meta Verified label is a subscription product, not a support tier. It buys you a different queue — not a different outcome. When the underlying system can't reverse automated decisions, paying for priority access to that system doesn't help.
What Meta Engineers Are Actually Doing at Work
On April 6th, something interesting showed up on X. A post about what Meta employees are doing on their internal tools:
Exclusive: Meta employees are 'tokenmaxxing' and competing on an internal leaderboard called 'Claudeonomics' for status as a token legend. Over a recent 30-day period, total usage on the dashboard topped 60 trillion tokens.
1.8 million impressions. This isn't a八卦 leak — it's someone inside Meta describing the actual incentive structure. Employees are competing on leaderboards for AI usage. That's how performance reviews work.
@jyoti_mann1 FAANG engineers are notorious at gaming internal metrics for getting performance bonuses / promotions. I would say 75% of them could give 0 shit about the end customer. That's why Instagram is so buggy half the time.
Whether you think that's fair or not, think about what it means for your appeal. The person whose job it is to review your case is being measured on tickets closed per hour, not accounts correctly reinstated. Unbanning someone is a risky call — if the ban was right, reversing it looks bad on the metrics. Closing the ticket is safe. Fast. Metric-positive.
The rational move inside that incentive structure is to process appeals at surface level and close them. And that's exactly what the data shows is happening.
The Third-Party Echo
When the official channels don't work, a secondary market appears. In the replies to almost every disabled account post:

We're not vouching for any of these services — the scam risk is real and serious. But notice what's being promised: access to someone who can actually do something. The promise itself tells you what users have figured out. The official form isn't it.
Why Your Appeal Has Already Failed
Most people follow the playbook: submit the appeal, wait, hope. Here's why that almost never works, even when the ban was obviously wrong:
What's Actually Happening to Your Appeal
The reviewer sees the AI's conclusion first. They're not evaluating your case from scratch. They're evaluating whether to uphold a decision that already has institutional weight behind it. You're arguing against a system, not a person.
You don't know what triggered the ban. The violation notice describes a category, not a cause. Without knowing whether it was a login anomaly, a behavioral flag, or a shared device problem, your appeal is addressing the wrong issue.
The decision may already be made. If the automated system hit a confidence threshold, the case is queued for confirmation, not reconsideration. Your appeal becomes a confirmation ritual.
Timing doesn't help if the framing is wrong. A perfectly documented appeal submitted in the wrong format, at the wrong queue stage, gets the same result as a one-line protest.
The appeal form is a pressure valve. It exists so users have somewhere to send their frustration, and Meta can report that appeals are being processed within 24 hours. That metric measures throughput. It doesn't measure whether you got your account back.
What Would Actually Change the Outcome
The cases we see that do recover — after the standard appeal has failed — share one thing: they introduce new information that makes the false positive case impossible to ignore. Not emotionally compelling. Structurally unignorable.
That means identifying the actual automated signal that triggered the ban, not arguing with the policy label. It means presenting account history as a counter-signal to the risk score. It means submitting evidence in a format that forces the reviewer to explicitly disagree with specific facts, rather than passively confirming a conclusion they didn't evaluate.
The system isn't designed to fix its mistakes. But people inside it are capable of recognizing them — when the case is framed in a way that makes ignoring it more costly than acting on it.
